Reasons to object
-
FOOD vs FUEL
Farming is supposed to produce food. The proposed Industrial Gas Plant uses anaerobic digestion that will rely on crops grown specially to rot down to create industrial biomethane. Acres of arable land will be used for AD crops harming the UK’s food security.
-
NOT GREEN ENERGY
Despite claims that AD produces ‘clean’ gas, any benefits are outweighed by the resources used to build the plant, diesel HGVs transporting crops, slurry and CO2 and the need to import food that could have been grown in the UK.
-
DAILY HGV TRAFFIC
Rural lanes throughout the countryside will be used by HGVs to serve the industrial gas plant 12 hours a day. Local roads and junctions are not designed for such heavy traffic; neither are the existing farm tracks which are also proposed to be blighted with HGVs serving the gas plant.
-
ROAD SAFETY
A significant increase in road traffic with 12 hours of HGVs and other vehicles (every day) driving through villages and countryside on rural lanes and farm tracks will be a danger to pedestrians, cyclists, horse riders and other drivers.
-
IMPACT ON THE COMMUNITY
None of the fuel produced will serve the local community BUT everyone living in local villages of both Melton Borough Council and South Kesteven District Council will be affected by the proposals. The fuel produced is being sold directly to industry.
-
HARM TO ECOLOGY
The proposed industrial gas plant will result in loss of hedgerows and trees which will directly harm the local ecology. Despite claims of aiming to achieve a Biodiversity Net Gain (as required by law form Feb 24), the loss of fields, established hedgerows and trees is not acceptable.
-
DAMAGE TO RURAL LANDSCAPE
Industrial Anaerobic Digestion, biomethane gas and C02 production and associated HGV traffic will significantly harm the character of the rural countryside. Our Neighbourhood Plan does not support industrial development within open countryside.
-
IMPACT ON COUNTRYSIDE VIEWS
The introduction of industrial scale development in the countryside will spoil views from far and wide. The industrial gas plant will only add to the harm to views already caused by the cold store at Easton.
-
NOISE AND ODOUR
The storage of maize and other crops within several industrial sized silage clamps - the size of several football pitches will be smelt for miles and the noise of the plant, machinery and associated HGV traffic will destroy the rural tranquillity of the area.
FARMLAND FOR FOOD
“Because as COVID-19 and the effects of climate change have illustrated, food security is fundamental to our wider national security. British farmers already produce, … about 60% of the food that we eat, and I recognise and support your desire to do more..”
- The Rt. Hon. Steve Barclay MP -
Speaking at the Oxford Farming Conference 4th January 2024
